Half a billion.

That is the amount paid by Medicare to chiropractors on an annual basis.  At a time when we are struggling to contain the rising cost of health care and debating the use of tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood or to pay for contraceptives, it is truly impossible to fathom why we are still covering chiropractic services.  As a physician I practice evidence-based medicine, utilizing treatments whose efficacy has been clearly established through large scale clinical trials, yet each year I am reimbursed less for the same level of service.  Alternative medicine should be an out of pocket expense, not one that is funded by the federal government with our tax dollars.

On Tuesday I swam at Nitro with Steve, Tom, David, Jean, and Jeff.  Jordan coached.

300 swim, 200 kick, 300 pull, 200 choice
10 x 150 @ 2:15, odds 25 fly/50 back/25 breat/50 free, evens 50 fly/25 back/50 breast/25 fly; tough IM set, 1500 yards on a 1:30 base
6 x 100 pull @ 1:25, descended from 1:10 to 1:05 and felt very strong
16 x 25 "plow" kick @ :30
100 easy

I missed yesterday's practice because I needed to see a consult at the hospital.  This morning I swam at Nitro with Steve, David, Zach, Jeff, Kirk, and Tom.  Jordan coached.

10 x 50 @ :50, averaged :35s
8 x 75 fly/back/breast @ 1:20
6 x 100 @ 1:30, 1-3 free, 4-6 kick; held 1:09-1:10 on the free, didn't make the interval on the kick
4 x 125 @ 1:50, "floating" IM, made 'em
200 easy

My rhomboid is about 90% better.  Diagnosis:  rhomboid tendinitis, an overuse injury.  Treatment:  ice, Aleve, stretching, rotator cuff exercises with Therabands, and no further manipulation of the spine.
