Plan to spend the day studying for the recertification exam in interventional cardiology which I will be taking in November. The exam was first offered in 1999 at which time about 2,ooo interventional cardiologists were certified worldwide. To maintain certification the exam must be retaken at ten year intervals; in addition, the Board requires documentation of an adequate volume of cases (150 in a two year period) to demonstrate competency. For reasons that are unclear to me, board certification in interventional cardiology is not a prerequisite for hospital privileges to perform coronary interventions. Go figure. On the other hand, our practice, unlike most, does require board certification and will ask physicians to voluntarily relinquish their privileges to perform these procedures.
