I chose the free option instead since I am going to focus on the 500:

Back from Zones. Did not swim as fast as I would have liked, but really about what I expected based on how I have been feeling in the pool lately. Had to drive three hours to Dallas after work on Friday evening, which is a workout in itself, but it was a nice road trip for me and my son. The pool was a bit warm. Wore my Blue Seventy Nero Comp, which is holding up well.

The 500 was my third fastest in Masters, the 100 my second fastest (went 55.60 back in 2003). I split the 500 as well or better than I ever have, and essentially negative split the 100 (which means I need to work on my start and take it out faster; I have never been under :29 off the wall in a Masters race). Both swims actually felt good.

Swam with Lynne, Steve, David, Alex, Greg, Jeff, Jordan, et al. Nitro continues to grow from the days when only Larry and I showed up for the 5:30 practices.

4 x 400 @ 5:30; I swam all four, averaged 5:10. Could have gone faster with more rest, but that was the interval the other "deep enders" chose. However, most of them pulled two or more of these.

12 x 25 @ :30 working on breakouts and finishes (would have been under :56 with a better finish on Saturday)

Planning to swim at the Belton meet on May 16 since I cannot go to Nationals. Only an hour away from Austin in a new pool, so I will have another shot at the 500 before short course season ends. My dad may return to competition that weekend; he should be able to post a top ten time in his age group (85-89) if he swims the 1650.

Time Travel

In Physics of The Impossible, time travel is considered a Class II impossibility, meaning that it exists at the very edge of our understanding of the physical world and, if it is possible at all, will not be realized for thousands (if not millions) of years.  Until then, although we may move freely in all directions through space, we move only forward through time.

Masters swimming is all about time.  We see the passage of time on the pace clock which reminds us without comment that we have missed the interval we once made with ease.  We see it on the scoreboard that records a slower time for the same event swum with the same effort.  

Overlooking Point Reyes, Verlyn Klinkenborg writes in today's New York Times: "If time were like the tides, we would surge into the future and rush back to the past, twice daily, while the narrow balance point we call the present worked its way steadily forward."

I spent a lot of time talking to Patrick Allen at Zones this weekend.  When we'd last seen each other, we had been teenagers.  I was 18, home from college on Christmas break, and had joined the high school practice at the district's new aquatic center; he was a senior, in the middle of a season which would carry him to state and a lifetime best in the 200 free.  Over thirty years later, we immediately recognized each other, our minds correcting for the passage of time and photoshopping each other's faces.  We picked up our conversation where we had left off, like opening one of the books on my nightstand and turning to the marked page.  Both physicians with families, we share the same outlook on medicine and life in general, the roots of our philosophies traceable back to the people we were long ago. In that sense, we are time travelers, moving along the same trajectory toward the same destination.  And we swim on against the rush of the tide, trying to slow down the journey and hold on to who and what we once were.

I agree with you. In the ten years you were employed by AIG, you were overpaid. You agreed to a salary of one dollar in 2008 because you knew that you would receive compensation in the form of a bonus in excess of one million dollars, a reasonable expectation since it was written into your contract. Of course it was a bonus in name only, distributed to executives such as yourself independent of the actual performance of AIG, a failing corporation that required a multi-billion dollar taxpayer-financed bailout by the federal government to avoid bankruptcy and even greater damage to the global financial system. And now, after claiming a large charitable contribution deduction on your tax return, you can expect a sizable tax refund from the very same federal government you are loathe to reimburse. You'll have to forgive us if we do not see you as a victim in this debacle.

Driving to Dallas this afternoon with Josh. Plan to get a good night's sleep and be ready to rock tomorrow. It appears that the Blue Seventy Nero Comp will be banned by FINA in 2010. By some strange coincidence, the LZR will be the only full body technical suit approved under the new regulations. Wonder how much Speedo had to spend to achieve that. With the stroke of a pen their competition is eliminated. Perhaps Masters swimmers should boycott their products.

On Saturday I will be racing an old nemesis from my high school days, Patrick Allen, who I believe is a physician in Dallas. He swam for a rival high school, but all six of the schools in our district trained together at the Dad's Club every afternoon, so we were more like teammates. The head coach was Pete Payne, a football coach from Memorial High School. To this day I have no idea what his swimming credentials were, but Memorial usually did well at state because of swimmers who had trained under Richard Quick and Skip Kenney.

Psych sheets are posted. I am seeded 8th overall in the 500 with a 5:33.18, 3rd in my age group (M50-54). Swam in the same meet in 2004 when it was held in southwest Houston and placed 2nd in the 500 (M45-49) with a 5:59.82.

Assigned set was 2 x 4 x 200 IM or 250 free; I did 4 x 200 free @ 3:30, held 2:30 with moderate effort, felt sluggish, HR was about 145 - 150
8 x 50 @ 1:00, 500 race pace, held :33 feet to feet, HR was 144 at the end. Felt smooth

Zones in 4 days. Tomorrow I will begin swimming the race pace 50s with more rest.

Great weekend. Went to the Spurs game with my son on Sunday.

Beginning to taper for Zones. Felt pretty sluggish as expected. Shared a lane with Steve. Clint coached, but we modified the written workout.

500 swim, 400 kick (I kicked 200 with fins)
Assigned set was 4 x 500 @ 7:00 swim or pull; I pulled one and swam one
10 x 50s on our choice of intervals, we went on 1:00. I wanted to hold 500 race pace, started at :33s for the first six or seven, then went :32s. HR was 150 after the last one.

Events on Saturday (only swimming one day at Zones): 500 and 100 free. Goal for the 500 is 5:29, which would be a Masters personal best. Plan to split it :31 for the first 50 then :33.1 - :33.2 for the rest of them. For the 100 I would like to break :55, which would also be a Masters personal best, but I have not been training for sprints.

Up late last night watching our President talk to Leno.  Swam with Steve, Lynne, Tom and Eric.  Clint coached.  After practice Tom helpfully informed me that I may now participate in the senior games.  I am going to ask that they raise the minimum age, which seems reasonable since 50 is the new 30.

10 x 100 @ 1:30, five dolphin kicks off each wall.  I did three kicks, none of which seemed to propel me forward very well.  This was tiring.

Cold Daze

Missed practice this morning because of a dental appointment for a routine cleaning, after which I had to call the blood bank as usual. I believe the hygienist's last name was Mengele. Needed the extra sleep anyway as I am still trying to shake off my cold. The brutal call weekend didn't help--a cross between There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. I signed up for the 500 free at Zones, which if I swim will be a good test of the Blue Seventy Nero Comp tech suit since I haven't been training well lately. I also signed up for the 100 free which, as I am not a sprinter, will be all suit. I may just toss the suit in the water and let it swim by itself.

Swam this morning after only four hours of sleep, still fighting off this damn cold. Mike coached. I think I swam in a lane with David, but things were a little fuzzy. Missed part of the workout to answer a page.

More good news--FINA might ban the Blue 70 in 2010. Don't know if that applies to Masters swimming yet. If so, I guess it will become an expensive training suit.

Call Daze

I am on call this weekend and didn't get to sleep until after 2:00 am, so I didn't swim this morning. Apparently I missed a main set of two 1000s, which is about 600 yards too long for me anyway. As it turns out I am shaking off a bit of a cold today, which may explain how I felt yesterday. Call might be fun if I actually enjoyed driving, which I don't. In 24 hours I have burned half a tank of gas, lining the pockets of our good friends in Saudi Arabia who will carry suitcases full of money into Pakistan to build madrassas where the next generation of terrorists are being educated. Go figure. And speaking of education, isn't anyone else feeling a bit insulted by the media's references to Wall Street investment bankers as "the best and the brightest"? I went to school with these guys; they were all out drinking every night while I was studying biochemistry.

10 x 100 @ 1:30 cruise; I was trying to hold 1:10 but averaged 1:11. Felt like they should have been faster but my HR at the end was only 156 which corresponds to moderate effort/En2 for me. Still tired from the 400 IMs yesterday.

4 x 400 IM @ 8:00; best was 6:10. Alex told me it looked like I was "boxing" when I was swimming fly, but I think he saw me on the last 25 meters when it had turned into butterstruggle. Or maybe he said I reminded him of a box of donuts.
4 x 100 written as odds prime stroke fast, evens easy free, no interval. Swam them all free @ 1:30, went 1:17, 1:21, 1:21, and 1:22.

Went 2:17, 2:15, 2:14 (1:06/1:08), 2:14 (1:05/1:09). The last three are my best series of 200s yet. Eric went 2:09, then 2:12 but swam the third IM and faded on number 4. Dave (aka Sammy Save-up) blasted a 2:06 on number four. I don't have that kind of speed without my magic suit.
